Suddenly It's Autumn

Next to Spring, my favorite season is Autumn. Catherine and I enjoyed a week of prime weather in Minnesota for the first week in October then came back to Florida to find the hot humidity gone and falling acorns and pinecones! It's almost time for us to start the seemingly never ending chore of raking leaves and cleaning gutters, but we also get to have evening fires in our outdoor firebox, and preparing our gardens for winter. It's a wonderful time of year! Here are a few pictures I've taken from our Minnesota trip as well as a few I took once we got back here to Florida of my two favorite girls (Catherine and Mya) at a local pumpkin patch.

Things I Remember

Things I Remember
Sometimes memories fly from my mind like frightened birds finally set free.
I remember being young and giggley, skinny-legged and awkward, hair crazy with curls. Spending hours climbing trees, playing house, or riding bikes down Hillside Drive on my bike with my girlfriends in tow. I had Donny Osmond and David Cassidy posters on my pink-wallpapered walls and stuffed animals and dolls posed in their respective places on my chenille bedspread. I wore lace ruffled ankle socks and chewed my fingernails.
I remember lazy summer days with Barbie dolls, clothes and accessories spread out on our front brick patio. Games of hide and seek and Red-Rover-Red- Rover played long after dark, and hating to quit even after Mom called us in for the night.
I remember my mother pinning my Girl Scout pin on my little Brownie uniform as I stood proudly after crossing the little bridge at one of many ceremonies.
I remember posing in my First Communion dress, complete with white gloves and pearl-crowned veil, feeling as white, pure, and special as my dress.
I remember walking home from Fishburn Elementary with my brothers and sister after school every day, being careful to walk far enough away from them that people wouldn’t think we were related.
I remember filing into church every Sunday no matter what, and we took up half a pew! We made quite a line headed for Communion, tallest to smallest, solemn and with our hands folded together in prayer.
I remember my sister Jody and I sitting at our miniature table and chair set and serving each other invisible tea and cookies on little plastic plates, sipping noisily and with our pinky fingers mid-air and dainty- like.
I remember seeing fields of green and brown, old trees and ice rimming the lake, like crocheted lace. And apple trees heavy with fruit, maple leaves as red as tomatoes, and my breath a frosty cloud in the air while a sickle moon hung like a tree ornament in the purple sky.
I remember Dad pointing out a grey squirrel in our yard as he ran up a tree chasing another, and I remember him teaching me the names of all the trees. He pointed out and named for me all the clouds, spilled like popcorn in the sky as they floated by. I remember his voice like poured cream and him looking at me as if I were the gold he’d just turned up in a streambed…and I felt lucky.
I remember Christmases and cranberries, sugared and peanut butter-filled dates, bowls of nuts, a tree full of tinsel, a vintage angel on the top, the smell of ham or turkey cooking and Mom’s best china and crystal.
I remember snow gray afternoons and quilted fields, golden haystacks, the scent of burning wood and the crunch of leaves under my feet, black and white spotted cows grazing under canopies of trees, huge platters of delicious sweet corn glistening with melted butter.
I remember the smell of summer, sun buttered mornings, grass freshly mown and the sound of boat engines on the lake, tractors pulling loads of hay, raw black earth under my bare feet, running down hills as fast as I could, the wind’s warm breath kissing my cheek.
I remember Dad sitting in his recliner after dinner, a hole in the arm bulging guts of yellow foam, watching All In The Family or the Vikings playing football.
I remember the sky a darkest blue, sugared with tiny white stars and Daddy pointing out the constellations for me. I remember his croupy pick up truck and his thumb-printed eyeglasses, his flannel shirts and ever present hat, cigarettes in his shirt pocket and his boots worn and soft with age.
I remember the pearly sun on the shortest of winter days, the outside cloaked with the quiet of new snowfall and the smell of supper floating through the air, and of setting the table every night with plates, silverware and napkins, and pouring milk for everyone.
But more than all that……..
I remember being tucked in at bedtime
Every night
Starless or sugared
Blue or grey
Quiet or windy
A houseful
Or just us two;
Me in my favorite flannel nightgown,
my mother bending over my bed
to kiss me goodnight
her love surrounding me like a scent.
I don’t remember when that stopped, only that it did.
And I’ve missed it ever since.

Richard and I went to the beach Saturday afternoon to beach comb before going to a cocktail party at a beautiful oceanfront home down the road a bit later...it was a beautiful evening with the cool sand under our bare feet, a nice breeze, mostly isolated beach occupied only by shore birds and one lone fisherman. Richard scoured for shark teeth and I went in search of my mermaid tears, or colored sea glass. I found four pieces--two very worn, frosty white pieces and two jagged pieces of amber. I picked up odd bits of shells, an osprey feather...and took about 150 pictures. It was a peaceful 90 minutes. To top off a wonderful evening, we stopped in at our friend's party and was met at the door with a silver platter of delicious treats. The bar was set up on the oceanfront deck and it rivaled any I'd seen, even in nightclubs! The food was wonderful and so were the luscious cocktails. We met a few nice couples and enjoyed lively conversations while drinking in a beautiful sunset over the water, the roar of the ocean our only music. Quite the perfect evening. Though I didn't take any pictures at the party, here are a few from our walk on the beach. --Lori

Fishing trip August 27th, 2006

Richard, Michael and I went deep sea fishing yesterday off the coast of Mayport, Florida. We caught several nice King Fish, the largest being about 35" long and 25 pounds. The sunrise was spectacular. I watched many tea saucer sized jelly fish float by our boat all day, along with palm sized crabs. We were in 50-60 feet of water and we had most of our luck early in the day (before 8 am) trolling. By 10 the biting had died down and as I lay with my book contently, the two guys bottom fished for snapper and whatever else they could find. Here are some pictures I took while we were out yesterday!

Catherine had style and humor at an early age!

Another favorite picture! Here Catherine is when she was just 3.

Anna Maria Island

This is one of my favorite photos of Richard, Catherine and I and I wanted to share it here. We were at a nephew's wedding on Anna Maria Island near Long Boat Key on the Gulf coast. It was November and as you can see, our winters in Florida are for the most part very mild.

Where have I been?

Has it really been almost a whole month since I've updated you? It doesn't seem possible, yet I've been busy with so much that time has flown by....the kids started back to school and that has engulfed me in a whirlwind of events and tasks! Catherine started Kindergarten at St. Matthews's Catholic School and Michael started his Sophmore year at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. We've also been busy having fun---the shrimp have been running and we've been taking the boat out in the evening which is wonderful. The temperatures are cooler on the water and the breeze feels great. I sit content with my glass of wine and my camera on my lap, ready for that unexpected egret or heron flying overhead, or the spectacular sunset over the water...regardless I guess you can see my attention has been somewhat diverted. I have been busy taking new pictures and I will share some of them with you. I've also been busy writing scribbles in the journals I keep ever handy---one at my bedside table and one that totes along with me wherever I go, in my giant sized purse (sized perfectly to fit my camera and extra lens on an outing---who cares about makeup--I need camera space!)

Soon I will share some of my scribblings with you. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I've taken this month!

Two of my favorite beach things: Rum Runner cocktails and cocunut shrimp

Coming soon: Tomorrow I will post a favorite duet: Coconut shrimp and RumRunner Cocktails. Nothing beats that pair for sitting beach side on a hot sunny day! Unless you've been beside Florida's turquoise waters sipping an ice cold RumRunner while munching a coconut shrimp, you haven't experienced the closest thing to heaven on earth. I'll have all you need to know here for you tomoorrow at the VattHouse. Tune in and sit back, close your eyes and enjoy!

If that doesn't work, come on down and I'll make you one myself.

The Perfect Painkiller

The Painkiller, the quintessential Caribbean rum cockail:

1 ounce pineapple juice
1 ounce cream of coconut
1 ounce orange juice
1 1/2 oz. Pusser's blue label rum
10-ounce glass filled with ice
5 ounces of Grand marnier
Fresh ground nutmeg
Touch of cinnamon

Without ice, shake or stire the pineapple juice, cream of coconut, orange juice and Pusser's rum. Pour over ice and shake vigourously. Float Grand Marnier, then top with nutmeg and touch of cinnamon. Note: Up to 4 ounces of rum can be added for added taste.

TIDBITS

Recycling a 6-foot tall stack of newspapers saves the life of a 35-foot tall tree.

Americans are responsible for generating roughly 20% of the garbage in the world.

An average American child watches 28 hours of television each week.

An average American throws away 25 trillion Styrofoam cups.

Every day 34,000 children die f rom causes related to poverty and hunger.

1789 the total US fedweral government debt was $190,000 (heck, that's more than the average American family in 2006!)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (I've always loved dolphins--now I know why they're so happy!)

By the end of 2006 Jacksonville will have a total of 36 Starbuck Coffee shops! Phew, that's a lot of coffee lovers for one of the hottest states in the USA!

Prevatt Coat Of Arms

42 Lovell Avenue

Grandma’s wooden box of clothespins on the painted grey and white veranda…old metal lawn chairs with speckled red paint—how far can I rock before going all the way over or Grandma warning me to stop? A garden tucked beside a leaning old garage, a row of boxwood hedges and trees circled with Hostas and Lily of the Valley. Huge Hydrangeas as large as tabletops, bursting with fist-sized blooms of purple and blue. And the trees along one side of the sloping driveway, that grew taller with every one of my birthdays; head tall to me then, but reaching far into the sky and wider than Grandpa’s chair now. The white station wagon in the driveway with a statue of St. Joseph on the dash, red leather bench seats and the smell of his cigars forever inside. Lemon meringue pies and ham and mustard sandwiches, clothes hampers or stools with a stack of phone books as make-shift chairs pulled up to an extended kitchen table for the extra family Grandma’shouse was bursting with—us! A window fan humming in the den window, Grandpa’s pencils in a tin cup on his desk, the sleeper sofa my Mom and Dad squeezed into every night of our visit, while my sister and I were tucked in together in the spare room just feet away.
I remember one of the most peaceful, sweet mornings of my life, waking up in that room.
I was in the old twin bed, one my mother herself slept in many years before as a child herself. Statues of Mary and Joseph on the bureau under lacey doilies and white, sheer ruffled curtains at the window, a glimpse of lush green yard, Mrs. Gherard’s home next door. Bird song wafted through the open window, from one of the many trees shading the lawn.
I had no needs then, no compulsive urges, no scattered thoughts, no regrets, no sorrows. Just simple, complete happiness; pure-white happiness and a state of nothingness and wholeness at the same time. Content and safe as if I were enveloped in the very arms of a winged angel.

Catherine when she was only 2. What a character she was even then!

Richard and I. A favorite photo while on vacation at the beach.

Our son Michael while kayaking in the Ortega River near our home. Taken in early June, 2006.

This was taken in October of 2005 while visiting my other in Minnesota. This was taken at one of my favorite spots about a mile from her lake home. This road is "Rose Hill Lane" which cuts through the middle of Rose Hill Cemetery where my grandparents, uncle and other relatives and family friends are buried. Fall time in Minnesota is beautiful.

I love birds! I love taking their pictures and I love watching them and then finding them in my Sibley's bird guide!

One of my favorite beach pictures.

Our lovely granddaughter Mya (even if she didn't have eyes like that, we'd give her anything she wanted!)
