Horseshoe Creek

Here are a few pictures taken during our last kayak trip a couple weeks ago. Richard and I went to Horseshoe Creek, a new spot for us. The landing was beautiful with a huge canopy of ancient oak trees. It was a beautiful day, blue sky and few clouds. We had a quiet drive on winding roads along the coast, alone just the two of us, a rare treat. We launched our kayaks into a beautiful marsh, a veritable bird and wildlife sanctuary alive with birdsong and the sound of reeds blowing in the wind...and not much else. Sliding through the cool blue-green water, paddles dipping quietly as we steer along the zig zagging curves that wind through the marsh, seeing mullet jump both left and right of us while gulls squack over head. I stop and dig out my camera, let the kayak drift into reeds taller than my head; I see a black, mucky shore with oyster and coquina shells thickly sprinkled all over. My paddle dips quietly into the water again as I spy an egret tip-toeing with daddy-long-legs and head ducked towards the water in hunt for a perch or mullet, which he casually catches and swallows quickly, throwing his head back in glee. I smell the salt marsh and swear I can even smell the green and the gold of the grasses growing. Save for the sound of a screeching gull now and then, it is quiet as a tomb. I look at the water and see the sky above reflected in moving shadows, blue and black....and I paddle on. Richard is around the bend now and I move quietly that way, wondering if he's caught a fish yet.
